o According to the NSPCCs Child Maltreatment in the UK survey, it is suspected that around 1% of the UKs child population are sexually abused (thats 120,000 children), and 13% suffer maltreatment (1,560,000 children)
o It is thought that more than 1,500 women are brought into the UK every year and forced into prostitution and that at least £1.5m is spent a week in UK brothels. (Home Office)
o 1.8 million pensioners live in poverty, 60% of women aged 75 and over live alone (Age Concern), 29,000 older people die unnecessarily each year (Help the Aged), At least 2 decomposing bodies of elderly people who have died alone and been dead for three months or longer are found each week in London (Big Issue)
o Around 60,000 children are in the care of local authorities at any given time, almost 9000 of these are in childrens homes and not in foster care

Our Make Me Smile programme launched in 2008 and included gripping and powerful productions that sought not only raise awareness about sex-trafficking, child abuse, domestic violence and growing old alone but that also raised money for charities helping those directly affected by the issues, and also provided them with an opportunity to be involved and included in creating their own show.
